It’s been over a month since Bheki Makhubu and Thulani Maseko were first arrested. Makhubu, Editor-in-Chief of The Nation magazine and Maseko, a prominent human rights lawyer, were detained and charged with contempt of court after publishing two separate articles that criticised Swaziland’s judiciary in the February 2014 issue of The NationToday – after weeks of being detained and released numerous times – the trial of the two outspoken government critics resumed, presided over by one of the very judges that their articles denounced. The timeline below is not just a chronology of the events surrounding Maseko and Makhubu’s case; it is also an example of what legal labyrinths can open up when someone speaks out against the Swazi government and the justice system itself.
